Rust can be a persistent and frustrating problem, especially when it comes to trailers. Not only can it make your trailer look unsightly, but it can also compromise its structural integrity over time. However, with the right knowledge, tools and products, you can combat rust effectively and extend the lifespan of your trailer. In this article, we will discuss various methods to prevent and combat rust.
Regular Cleaning and Inspection
The first step in preventing and combatting rust is to establish a routine for cleaning and inspecting your trailer. Regularly washing your trailer, paying close attention to the boxed cross sections, axles, wheel arches and hard-to-reach areas where rust can often start. These can include; joins around U-bolts, wobble or fixed rollers and springs. When washing your trailer, especially after use in salt water, using salt inhibiting products such as Salt Slayer or Salt Away will be hugely beneficial. Salt residue is a leading factor in rust formation, so regularly using these products while washing your trailer will reduce your chances of getting rust.
Additionally, you should regularly inspect your trailer for any signs of rust, such as discoloration, bubbling paint, or flaking metal. Identifying rust in its preliminary stages allows for prompt action.
Treating Rust
It is easiest to remove rust and corrosion early on. The longer you leave it, the worse it will get and the more difficult it becomes to treat.
Surface Preparation
Before applying any rust treatment products, it is crucial to prepare the surface properly. Start by removing any dirt/grease/oil or contaminates. Once dry, remove any loose rust using a Wire Brush or a power tool with a wire brush attachment such as the 3M Paint and Rust Stripper.
Rust Remover
There are multiple products available which remove the rust and help restore the original metal appearance. Products such as CRC Evapo Rust removes rust and is ideal for cleaning up parts like nuts and bolts. It comes readily available in 2 different, easy to use options, either a re-usable liquid or an aerosol gel spray.
Alternatively, the NZ made Grunt Emer-gel is another great option to use, simply (with the use of gloves) sponge on to the affected areas, leave for 30-60 minutes and wash off with water
Tip: for hard to reach or stubborn sections a scourer may be more beneficial
Rust Converter
For more severe rust or large areas, a rust converter may be more effective than a rust remover. CRC Rust Converter chemically converts rust into a tough black stable compound, preventing further corrosion. This is available in both an easy to use aerosol spray or a liquid which you can apply using a brush. Once dry this can then be overcoated with a paint system for extra protection.
Rust inhibiting sprays
CorrosionX penetrating sprays disrupt and kill rust at a molecular level to stop it from spreading and provides long term protection against rust and corrosion. There are 3 versions available all with different viscosities which are tailored to how aggressively you want or need to treat the rust that is showing on your trailer. CorrosionX is often sprayed inside trailer box sections to protect harder to reach areas from rust.
Prevent Rust from Returning
Protective coatings play a vital role in preventing rust and maintaining the appearance of your trailer. Once the rust has been removed or neutralised, a protective coating should be used to prevent it from returning. Rust is caused when oxygen and moisture come into contact with iron or steel. Using a protective coating prevents these elements from coming into contact and therefore stops rust from forming.
There are various options available, products such as CRC Zinc-it or CRC Bright Zinc, are easy to apply, durable and resistant to corrosion. Ensure that you choose a coating suitable for your trailer's material and follow the application instructions for optimal results.
Grease
Another effective way to prevent rust and keep parts moving freely on your trailer is by using marine grease. Grease provides a protective barrier between the metal surfaces and moisture, preventing rust formation.
